Riding on roads

It is legal for people on bikes to ride on the road. Brisbane has a number of on-road bike lanes, but it’s not compulsory for people riding to use them. People driving a car need to stay at least one metre away from people riding a bike when overtaking. When riding on the road, it's important to remember three things:

  • be aware
  • be predictable
  • be seen.

If you would like to report an issue or have witnessed an incident while riding, you can do so via the Queensland Police Service - cyclist complaint online form.

Watch the below video on planning your journey and sharing the space so that we can all get to our destinations safely.

One metre matters

In 2014, the Queensland Government introduced the one-metre rule requiring drivers to stay at least one metre away from bike riders when overtaking at less than 60km/h, and 1.5 metres over that speed. Help keep our city’s streets safe for everyone and remember that one metre matters.
