Why ride

There are so many good reasons to ride. Riding a bike is not only great exercise but it’s a great way to reduce stress while heightening mental clarity and, it costs you less!

Feel healthy

Cycling Brisbane asked its members why they like riding a bike, and there was one stand out response: because it helps them to be healthy. Research has also found that riding a bike regularly can help to protect you from serious diseases including:

  • stroke and heart attack
  • some cancers
  • depression
  • diabetes and obesity
  • arthritis.

Beat congestion

Are you sick of being stuck in traffic? Join thousands of others making the switch from car to bike. Council research based on Census figures found that the number of people riding a bike to work in Brisbane’s city centre more than doubled (123%) between 2006 and 2016.

More than 600 bikes fit onto the same road space as 60 cars, so it’s a very efficient way to help reduce congestion while also creating a route that is safe and convenient for riding. Keep up with the new bikeways near you by joining Cycling Brisbane to receive monthly updates.

Cycling Brisbane’s qualified instructors can help you navigate your way around Brisbane City. Book into one of our free adult bike skills workshops.

Have more money to spend

According to the RACQ, the average running costs for a medium-sized new car is $202.87 every week. That’s around $10,500 every year. You can check how much your car costs to run.

If you’d like to buy a new bike or need accessories, join Cycling Brisbane and benefit from our partner discounts.

Do your bit for travel behaviour change

Every time you choose to go by bike, you are joining thousands of others in making a good choice for Brisbane. Riding a bike uses less energy and resources than driving. Riding is also a more efficient use of space than driving, which helps to protect our precious bushland, parks and waterways. Council’s Clean, Green and Sustainable states that choosing green transport is the single, most effective way we can help transform Brisbane into a sustainable city.

You can start by making small journeys by bike. Fnd out more about how you can ride locally and access Brisbane’s bikeways.
